Pickup Polo

A Weekly Summertime Experience in Authentic Middleburg

You might think polo is all fancy hats, sun dresses, blue blazers, and champagne toasts, but to play well in the big tournament, players and their horses need to stay fit and practice, practice, practice.

Welcome to Middleburg’s version of a “pick-up game” a dozen trucks with trailers, 48 horses and 9 football fields of perfectly mown grass.

What to Do

First, take it all in. Then act like you do this all the time. Wave a casual hello to the polo groom trotting 5 ponies to the field in one hand. Walk the rows of well-mannered mounts all waiting their turn. Pet a few. Mix up a tasty beverage in a mason jar from the tailgate of 1986 Chevy Scottsdale, slide into your field-side bench and let the polo fun begin. Oh, they usually cook up an Argentine Asado for everyone, but if you want to eat, it’s best to notify the cook ahead of time.

What to Wear

Wear whatever you want. Despite a million dollars’ worth of horses and trailers, this piece of authentic Middleburg is a pretension-free zone.

Where to Go

Drive one mile east of Middleburg, turn left down a bumpy dirt road past the main barn.  Get better directions here.

Hockey on Horseback: Arena polo is a physical game. Players and horses both use pads, and strict rules govern contact.

What it Costs

A $25 contribution helps to cover the club’s set up and catering costs.
